What is your main concern?

How to choose in 3 steps

1
The space
Consider the square meters and ceiling height: this sets how many air changes per hour are possible. Real-world coverage up to ~80 m² (standard) or ~40 m² (Junior).
2
The goal
For dust and allergens the HEPA filter matters most; for odors, gases and VOCs what matters is the chemical part of the filter. Standard models always have both, and the amount of activated carbon and zeolite is the same (up to 6.8 kg): what changes is the type, that is the impregnation that widens its chemical range.
3
The situation
A new or renovated home releases formaldehyde and VOCs; an environment with sensitive people needs the most complete filtration.
Allergies, dust and asthma

For pollen, dust mites, pet dander and fine particulate, the reference is the medical-grade HEPA filter, which captures 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. The most balanced model for everyday use is the HealthMate, which pairs the HEPA filter with up to 6.8 kg of activated carbon and zeolite: it therefore acts on particulate and, at the same time, on odors and VOCs. For smaller rooms there is the Junior version.

Austin Air HealthMate
Smoke, strong odors, formaldehyde and VOCs

When the issue is persistent odors, smoke, formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds, you need more capacity on the chemical fraction of the air. The HealthMate also acts on odors and VOCs with its 6.8 kg of activated carbon and zeolite; the HealthMate Plus contains the same amount, but with the addition of potassium iodide-impregnated carbon, more effective on aggressive gases and formaldehyde.

Austin Air HealthMate Plus
Bedroom and children

For rooms where you rest, where quiet operation at low speeds and very fine filtration matter, the Bedroom Machine is optimized for exactly this, with five-stage filtration that captures gases and very small particles.

Austin Air Bedroom Machine
Viruses, sensitive environments and MCS

For high-traffic spaces, for heightened immune vulnerability and for environments with chemically sensitive people, the Immunity Machine offers the most complete filtration: 8 stages with potassium iodide-impregnated carbon, zeolite with a proprietary impregnation, military-grade HEGA carbon cloth and medical-grade HEPA. Purely mechanical filtration, without ozone or ionization.

MCS note: all models use mechanical filtration, with no ozone or ions; for those who prefer non-impregnated media there are the HealthMate, Bedroom Machine and HealthMate Junior. You will find the details in the FAQ below and in our dedicated services for people with MCS.

Austin Air Immunity Machine
Travel, desk and personal spaces

For personal use, while traveling or on your desk, the Austin “it” is the compact purifier in the range: lightweight, with a medical-grade HEPA filter and, in the VOC Wrap version, an additional carbon wrap for odors and VOCs.

How Austin Air filtration works

All models share the same logic: mechanical and adsorption filtration, with no ozone or ionization. In short:

  • Several stages in one filter: pre-filters for larger particles, a medical-grade True HEPA filter (99.97% at 0.3 microns) and a thick bed of activated carbon and zeolite for gases, odors and VOCs.
  • Coconut shell carbon: rich in micropores, the smallest pores and the best suited to trapping VOCs at the low concentrations typical of indoor air.
  • 360° intake and contact time: air enters from all sides and passes slowly through the layer of carbon surrounding the HEPA; a longer contact time favours adsorption.
  • What changes between models: the Plus adds potassium iodide-impregnated carbon; the Bedroom Machine adds military-grade HEGA carbon cloth; the Immunity Machine adds both, plus a mineral with a proprietary impregnation. The operating principle stays the same, and the housing is always hand-welded steel.

No Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or app, by design. It is the filter that cleans the air, not the connection. Less electronics means fewer components that can fail over time, no updates to install, no data collected and no radio signals emitted by the purifier. In all models the motor has no electronic boards and the speeds are set with a knob: this is why they are also appreciated by people with electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS).

Real coverage and air changes

Coverage depends on room volume and how many air changes per hour you want. Manufacturers' theoretical maximums assume very few air changes and are of little practical use. That is why we state realistic coverage: up to ~80 m² for standard models and ~40 m² for Junior models. For larger rooms or more frequent air changes, multiple units may be considered. Do you have an old air purifier SAFA, iCleen HEPA or Allermed?

If you own a air purifier from a brand no longer in production, such as SAFA (FP line), iCleen HEPA or Allermed, you can often keep using it with genuine Austin Air filters. These brands share the same filtration platform as Austin Air.

Compatibility depends on two simple measurements: the diameter and the height of the cylindrical filter. If they match those of an Austin Air filter, the filter is compatible. You will find all the details, brand-by-brand cases and how to measure, in the dedicated article: what to do if your purifier is no longer in production. When in doubt, contact us: we will help you check your unit's compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HealthMate and HealthMate Plus?

Both have medical-grade HEPA, carbon and zeolite, in the same amount (up to 6.8 kg). The HealthMate Plus does not contain more of it: part of the carbon is impregnated with potassium iodide, which increases effectiveness on many gases, including VOCs, formaldehyde, benzene, acrolein (typical of wildfire smoke), ammonia and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) from traffic and gas stoves, as well as many other household gases and odors.

Which model for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)?

All Austin Air models are suitable: filtration is exclusively mechanical and by adsorption, with no ozone and no ions. The choice depends on the substances to be treated and on individual tolerance to the filter media. HealthMate Plus and Immunity Machine, with potassium iodide-impregnated media, offer the greatest capacity on VOCs and are also used regularly by a growing number of people with MCS; those who prefer non-impregnated media can choose the HealthMate, Bedroom Machine or HealthMate Junior. It remains a non-medical use: the purifier does not replace a doctor's advice, diagnosis or therapy.

Do Austin Air purifiers produce ozone?

No. Filtration is exclusively mechanical and by adsorption: no ozone emission and no ionization.

HealthMate Plus or Bedroom Machine: which is better?

Neither is better than the other: they enhance two different things, and the amount of activated carbon and zeolite is the same (up to 6.8 kg). The HealthMate Plus has part of its carbon impregnated with potassium iodide, which makes it more effective on formaldehyde and aggressive chemicals: it is the typical choice for new or renovated homes, new furniture and wildfire smoke, and Austin Air recommends it as the best choice for people with MCS. The Bedroom Machine instead adds a fifth stage, military-grade HEGA carbon cloth, which refines the adsorption of gases and VOCs and is also indicated as extra protection against viruses, without impregnated media: it is designed mainly for the bedroom. If you want both, there is the Immunity Machine.

How often is the filter replaced?

The main filter pack lasts up to 5 years in normal home use; in high-load environments the life is reduced in proportion to use.
