Maintenance FAQ

How often should the filter be replaced?

The Austin Air main filter is designed to last up to 5 years with continuous use of 24 hours a day. This applies to all models; for the Austin "it" the HEPA filter lasts up to 5 years, while the VOC Carbon Wrap should be replaced about every 3 months. In environments with high concentrations of dust or pollutants, the useful life may be reduced.

How do I clean the outer pre-filter?

The pre-filter should be cleaned without removing it from the purifier, by gently vacuuming from the outside using a soft brush attachment. This avoids damaging the filter mesh. The recommended frequency is monthly, but depends on context: environments with pets, heavy dust or continuous use require more frequent cleaning.

Is the Austin Air filter washable?

No. Austin Air filters are not washable. Washing them would damage the HEPA fibres and activated carbon, eliminating their filtering capacity. Correct maintenance means vacuuming the outer pre-filter and replacing the full filter every 5 years. The Austin "it" pre-filters must not be washed either: when they are spent, they are replaced.

How do I know when it is time to replace the filter?

The most common signs are: a noticeable drop in airflow, the return of odours that were previously eliminated, and simply calculating the time since the last replacement. The maximum service life indicated by Austin Air is 5 years: beyond this point it is advisable to replace the filter even if it still looks in good condition.
