Company, warranty and certifications - back to indexHow long has Austin Air Systems been manufacturing medical-grade HEPA air purifiers in the USA?Since 1990, over thirty-five years! Why are Austin Air products superior to other air purifiers?Austin Air's advantage comes from the combination of clinically verified performance, oversized filters, and extremely robust construction. Over more than 25 years, Austin Air has been tested in 10 independent clinical trials conducted by 7 leading research institutions, with positive results in every case. Each standard-size Austin Air unit uses approximately 5.6 m² of medical-grade HEPA and up to 6.8 kg of activated carbon and zeolite, far more than many competing brands, allowing filters to reach an expected service life of up to about 5 years under normal residential use (actual lifespan always depends on pollution levels and usage). For details on all the trials, read our dedicated article. Are Austin Air purifiers covered by warranty?Yes. For private customers (B2C), in addition to the 24-month statutory warranty, High-Tech Market provides a 36-month commercial warranty covering mechanical and electrical components (motor and structure). Filters and pre-filters are consumables subject to saturation and are therefore excluded from time-based warranty coverage. Warranty coverage (summary)? For consumers (B2C), in addition to the 24-month statutory warranty, we provide a 36-month commercial warranty covering Austin Air mechanical and electrical components. Filters are consumables subject to wear/saturation and are not covered. Are the products certified?Yes, they comply with CE standards. Is there scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness?Yes, they are supported by numerous independent university studies. Are they manufactured in the USA?Yes, they are entirely manufactured in Buffalo, NY. Are they used in schools or hospitals?Yes, they are used worldwide in clinical environments. Why choose Austin Air over other brands? For their steel construction, filter lifespan and the results obtained in independent clinical trials. Read the full article for all the details → Filters and technology - back to indexWhat is the difference between the types of Austin Air filters? All standard-size and Junior filters share the same first two stages (pre-filters). HealthMate: activated carbon + zeolite + HEPA. HealthMate Plus: potassium iodide-impregnated activated carbon + zeolite + HEPA (greater capacity on formaldehyde and VOCs). Bedroom Machine: carbon + zeolite + HEPA + HEGA. Immunity Machine: carbon + zeolite, also impregnated, + HEPA + HEGA. The same types are available in Junior format (HealthMate Junior and Plus Junior), while the Austin “it” uses dedicated filters (HEPA, with optional VOC Carbon Wrap). What are the pre-filters made of?Our pre-filters are made of bonded polyester. What exactly is a HEPA filter?HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air): removes ≥99.97% of particles ≥0.3 μm and ~99% ≥0.1 μm. Austin Air filters are True Medical Grade, using Hollingsworth & Vose filter media (HC-4011 grade). How many square meters of HEPA filter do Austin Air purifiers contain?Approximately 5.6 m² in standard models and approximately 2.8 m² in Junior models, far more than most competitors. How much activated carbon and zeolite are used?Up to 6.8 kg (15 lb) of adsorbent blend in standard models and approximately 3 kg (6.5 lb) in Junior models. What is a HEGA filter?HEGA (High Efficiency Gas Arrestance) is a military-grade activated carbon fabric with a high surface area, very effective at adsorbing gases and VOCs. The manufacturer also describes it as useful against airborne viruses. What is activated carbon?A porous material that acts like a sponge to adsorb gases, fumes, and odors. What is zeolite?A natural mineral that adsorbs specific gases such as formaldehyde and ammonia. What are activated carbon and zeolite used for? They help reduce fumes, gases, odors, and volatile chemicals present in the air. Carbon/zeolite mixing ratio (HealthMate & Bedroom Machine)Approximately 10:1 (carbon:zeolite). Mixing ratio (HealthMate Plus)Approximately 10:1:1 (carbon:iodinated carbon:zeolite). What does CFM mean?CFM (cubic feet per minute) is the airflow unit used in the United States. We always state airflow in cubic metres per hour: standard models deliver about 80 / 212 / 425 m³/h (low / medium / high), while Junior models and the Austin “it” deliver about 53 / 106 / 212 m³/h. What does CADR mean?Austin Air does not endorse the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) as established by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) as it does not accurately measure the delivery of clean air. The CADR is calculated by multiplying the airflow by the filtration efficiency. A unit with an airflow of 340 m³/h and a 50% efficient filter scores the same as a unit with an airflow of 170 m³/h and 100% filtration efficiency. Both machines score identically, however the second is the better air purifier. The testing is done over such a short period of time, and it does not take into account the fact that some methods of "air purification" do not permanently remove particles, but only cause them to cling to room surfaces by static electricity. Once the electrical charge wears off and the bonds are broken, these particles will become airborne again in the environment. In addition, much of their testing is done in very small rooms, significantly smaller than the average room in a normal home: most of the machines tested would be utterly inadequate for use in, for example, a normal bedroom. And finally, the tests are done using devices that intermittently release particles, rather than continually releasing them as would occur in normal real-world environments. Due to the fact that the CADR rating does not test for any of these functions, we do not find it to be a meaningful method of evaluating air cleaners. Austin Air is not AHAM/CADR-certified because we believe it is an important part of an air cleaner's functionality that it be able to remove particles, gases and odors, not just attach them to the nearest surface, as well as perform consistently over long periods of time. Does the unit produce harmful substances? No: no ozone and no ionization. Is the motor painted or coated? No. What tests and approvals do Austin Air purifiers have?CSA/NRTL approved and CE marked. What technology do Austin Air purifiers use?True Medical HEPA, activated carbon, zeolite, steel housing, 360° air intake. How can I verify that air passes through the filter? If you feel air exiting from the top grille, it has passed through the filter. Why is there no “replace filter” indicator light?Chemical saturation is detected by odor before standard electronic sensors can reliably detect it. Does it remove radon? It filters the solid particles produced by radon decay. Filter maintenance and lifespan - back to indexWhen should I replace the filter? When persistent odors are noticeable (saturated carbon) or airflow drops significantly (saturated HEPA). Why might I need to replace it before 5 years?Heavy smoke, painting, new carpeting, or high traffic environments can saturate filters more quickly. Why does Austin Air state a 5-year filter lifespan? Thanks to the exceptional amount of activated carbon and zeolite (up to 6.8 kg in standard models) and the True Medical HEPA surface area (approximately 5.6 m²). Which filters are compatible with my purifier? All units manufactured since 1996 accept any standard-size filter (HealthMate, Plus, Bedroom, Immunity). If you own an old SAFA, iCleen or Allermed purifier, read our dedicated guide. I have an old SAFA, iCleen or Allermed purifier that is no longer in production: what can I do?We know these devices very well: the founder of High-Tech Market created the SAFA brand, so we can offer support you are unlikely to find elsewhere. If you own a discontinued or unavailable SAFA, iCleen or Allermed purifier, we can help you identify the most suitable equivalent Austin Air model. In some cases, depending on your unit's cabinet, it may also be possible to consider a filter upgrade to a higher configuration (for example an Immunity Machine type): contact us and we'll check it together. We've prepared a dedicated guide covering all the options: SAFA, iCleen and Allermed air purifiers: what to do if yours is no longer in production → Which end of the filter should be inserted first? The end with the label should face downward (when the unit is inverted for replacement). Does the purifier require maintenance?Vacuum the exterior pre-filter with a brush once a month. Nothing else. How long does an Austin Air filter last?Up to approximately 5 years under normal residential conditions. This is an expected lifespan, not a warranty period, and may be shorter in highly polluted environments or with intensive use. The one exception is the VOC Carbon Wrap for the Austin “it”, which lasts about 3 months. How do I replace the filter?Unscrew the bottom panel and remove the cylindrical filter. Are the filters recyclable? No, they must be disposed of as general waste. What maintenance does it require?Only periodic filter replacement and grille cleaning. How do I choose the compatible replacement filter? It depends on the cabinet size: Standard filters are interchangeable with each other, as are Junior filters. The Austin “it” uses dedicated filters. How do I clean the pre-filters and how often?Vacuum the exterior of the unit once a month. Original vs compatible filters: what’s the difference?Original filters ensure performance, sealing and lifespan. Defects attributable to the use of non-original replacement parts are not covered by warranty, and the 36-month commercial extension is conditional upon the use of original Austin Air replacement parts. Use, performance and installation - back to indexHow reliable is the construction?Welded steel body with baked powder coating. Each unit is tested in the USA and rechecked by High-Tech Market. Does the purifier have plastic parts?Yes: fan blade, wheels/feet, and control knob. How long will my unit last?Designed to last for many years with proper maintenance. Extended warranty up to 3 years; out-of-warranty repair program available. Where should I place the unit for maximum effectiveness?Anywhere, keeping at least 10 cm from the wall. In bedrooms, with the door closed, it performs at its best. How much space does it effectively clean?Standard models: up to 80 m²; Junior models and the Austin “it”: up to 35 m². These are indicative estimates for residential use: actual coverage depends on room volume, desired air changes per hour and pollution levels. Is it noisy? From less than 50 to 65 dB on standard models and from less than 45 to 63 dB on Junior models and the Austin “it”, depending on fan speed: from a whisper to a normal conversation. How much electricity does it consume?Maximum 120 W on standard models and 82 W on Junior models and the Austin “it”; at speed levels 1-2, consumption is very low. How much does it really consume?Energy consumption is comparable to that of a traditional light bulb. Where is the best place to position it?In bedrooms or the most frequently used living spaces. Can it run 24/7?Yes, it is designed for continuous operation. How long does it take to purify an average room?Approximately 15-20 minutes. Does it reduce dust in the home?Yes, it captures fine airborne dust particles. Is it easy to move?Yes, standard models are equipped with wheels. Are smaller versions available?Yes, the Junior models and the compact Austin “it”. How much do the purifiers weigh?Standard models weigh about 21 kg (24 kg packed); Junior models about 9.5 kg and the Austin “it” about 5.5 kg. Actual consumption and 24/7 operation?Designed for continuous 24/7 operation; speed levels 1-2 are recommended for optimal efficiency and minimal energy consumption. Health and applications - back to indexDo they help people with allergies?Yes: they help reduce airborne pollen, dust, pet dander, and mold spores.
